Cultural elements

Astronism in Iceland refers to the presence of the Astronist philosophy and religion in Iceland. The operations of the Astronist Institution in this country are under jurisdiction of the Astronist Superiate of Iceland, a national subsidiary of the worldwide Astronist Institution.

The Astronist Superiate of Iceland oversees the construction and maintenance of observatories and planetariums throughout its jurisdiction. Iceland is split into eight regions and is set to hold one Grand Observatory in the capital city of Reykjavik, which will be the only observatory in the country.

This national branch of the Astronist Institution manages the official representation and depiction of Astronism throughout this territory, including efforts to protect the identity of the philosophy with the intention of further disseminating it throughout the territory.

It is the Institution alone that is granted the status of proprietor to the philosophy in this territory as any other organisations or institutions proclaiming such a role are deemed as unauthorised proprietors and are therefore considered as part of the anti-Institutionist movement.

History of Astronism in Iceland[]

Astronism is currently not recognised as a religion in Iceland, but despite this, Astronist religious liberties are respected as part of Icelandic religious freedom laws.

In its 2020 Demographics of Astronism report, the Astronist Institution claimed 2,910 Icelanders were Astronists out of a total population of ~364,000 people.

Very few Astronist materials have been translated into the Icelandic language which presents a barrier for the further spread of Astronism in the Nordic country.
