Metareligion (also hyphenated as meta-religion) is the branch of theology and philosophy dealing with questions of what religion is, what religion should be, what religion will be in the future, and what role it has or should play in society and in private lives. It is considered the religious equivalent to the branch of study known as metaphilosophy.

There are various different approaches to metareligion including the following:

• Familialism - the notion that some religions are based in and around the home and private life such as Chinese folk religion. 
• Organisationalism - the notion that some religions are based in and around buildings and organisational structures separate from the home such as Christianity.
