Not to be confused with Transcendence or Transcension Hypothesis.
Transcension, also referred to as analipsis, is a form and method of salvation affirmed in several new religions, especially the space religion Astronism and its predecessors Cosmism and Cosmodeism. In these religions, transcension is attributed with many powers, prime among which is bringing about salvation, uniting humanity with God or becoming god-like. Space religions that affirm the doctrine of transcension in some form, either explicitly or implicitly, may be categorised as analiptic religions.
Transcension is the central belief and aim of the Astronist religion, the essence of which – defined as the salvific power of human ascension into outer space – is considered to be Astronism's principal dogma. Transcension is the process of raising the nature of a species from possessing a limited nature to an unlimited nature, thus escaping the bounds of cosmic limitation. This elevated status to unlimitation is taken by Astronists to equate to the salvation of a species. The study of transcension is called analipsology, a term which may also be used to refer to the doctrines of transcension collectively. The adjectives analiptic and transcensional are used in reference to transcension.
In the context of Astronism's view of history (called the Sideresis), transcension is the repairing of humanity from the scars of the Controversion and the fulfilment of the potential of humankind.
Etymology[]
The word 'transcension' was included as an entry in Webster's Dictionary in 1913 which gave the definition "the act of transcending, or surpassing; also, passage over."[1]
Alternative terms used by the Astronist Institution[]
Transcension is referred to with various terms in Astronist writings including analipsis, human transcension and transcendation. In some cases, transcension may be referred to as Astronist transcension in order to distinguish Astronism's doctrine of transcension from that of other religions or denomination that may attempt to adopt the word for their own soteriologies.
Alternative terms used by Astronist denominations[]
The concept of a conscious effort among human beings to move their civilisation to space with the connotation of salvific or theological rewards as a result has undergone several incarnations throughout the last two-hundred years, mostly recent is the Astronist Institution's adoption of the word 'transcension' in 2019. Denominations of Astronism have used several terms to refer to a similar concept but with numerous adaptations.

Definition and function[]
Role in Astronism[]
Transcension and ascension[]
While ascension is an act physical and directed upwards, transcension is physical, spiritual, and intellectual in a multitude of directions either upwards (towards the stars), inwards (towards oneself), or outwards (towards others).
Doctrines of transcension[]
Conferments[]
Main article: Analiptic conferment
The analiptic conferments are qualities inherent to all members of a sapient species that give it the ability to embark upon the course to transcension. Astronism identifies several conferments including:
- Scope
- Astronality
- Stellancy
- Propellence
- Merited scope
- Afflation
- Siderinium
- Reception
Plan of transcension[]
Main article: Plan of transcension
The Astronist religion is the embodiment of a plan to execute the salvation of humankind in the astronomical world. Astronism asserts its Astrosoteriology as the one and only true method to redeem the human species and so makes an exclusivist claim about what salvation is and how it is to be achieved.
Scope[]
Main article: Scope
Scope is the means by human beings may initiate and progress their transcension. Scope is the opportunity of the present moment afforded to all sapient beings to seek out ways of transcending their limitedness. Scope is the principal analiptic conferment.
Grand World[]
Main article: Grand World
The Grand World is the Astronist eschatological vision of an interstellar human civilisation that has significantly progressed along its course to transcension. The construction of the Grand World is the immediate aim of the Astronist religion within the broader aim of transcension. The Grand World is seen in the Astrosoteriology as the manifestation of humanity's transcension being in the works.
Transcensional history[]
Main article: Sideresis
Astronism presents a particular view of cosmic and human history in accordance with the natural evolution of The Cosmos towards specific transcensions. This account of history is called the Sideresis which integrates and makes justifications for all the major analiptic doctrines.
Cosmic limitation[]
Main article: Cosmic limitation
The cosmological principle foundational to the Astronist doctrines of transcension is that The Cosmos and all that exists within it, including humanity, possesses an inherently limited by the fact of its createdness. Much is attached to this limited condition for humanity including the explanation of human tendencies to evil and all forms of suffering. It is from this limited state of being that Astronism offers transcension as humanity's only path of escape out of and hence, equates transcension with saving humankind from this limitation. Astronist belief maintains that human beings and all other species in all cosmoses will forever remain subjugated by death, disease and decay, nescience, and fear and it is from these consequences of limitation Astronism seeks to redeem humanity from through our elevation to a higher, transcended existence for the species beyond the cosmic periphery, a process that must take place by traversing the astronomical world.
